Cardinal Filippo Spinola (EN)

Filippo Spinola was born in Genoa the first december of 1535, son of Agostino Spinola, Lord of Tassarolo and Pasturana, and Geronima Doria. He was Cardinal of the Holy Roman Church.

Filippo Spinola was born in Genoa the first december of 1535, he was the third of the six children of Agostino Spinola, Lord of Tassarolo and Pasturana, and Geronima Doria. He was Cardinal of the Holy Roman Church.
They belonged to the fourth branch of the family Spinola di Luccoli. The other siblings were Marcantonio (count of Tassarolo and of the Holy Roman Empire and knight of S. Iago), Ettore, Ottavio (knight of Malta), Fabrizio and Ottavia. He had “felice disposizioni per le science” (good disposition for science).
He served the city of Genoa with distinction. Went to Rome, entered the church and became referendary of the Tribunals of the Apostolic Signature of Justice and of Grace and later, domestic prelate of His Holiness.
Sacred orders. Received the subdiaconate.
1566 Elected bishop of Bisignano, with dispensation for not having yet received all the major orders. After consecrated in the Pauline chapel, Vatican palace, by Cardinal Giambattista Cicada, assisted by Carlo Cicada, bishop of Albenga, and by Giovanni Ambrosio Fieschi, bishop of Savona.
1569 Transferred to the see of Nola
1583 Created cardinal priest in the consistory
1584 received the red hat and the title of S. Sabina
1585 Took part in the conclave, which elected Pope Sixtus V. Administrator of the diocese of Sora. Legatein Perugia and Umbria ( resigned the government of the two dioceses in July ) . Legate in the duchy of Spoleto.
1590 Prefect of the S.C. of Regulars. Prefect of the pontifical galleys. Took part  in the first conclave, which elected Pope Urban VII.
1590 Took part  in the second conclave, which elected Pope Gregory XIV.
1591 Took part  in the conclave, which elected Pope Innocent IX. Renewed the Legate in Perugia and Umbria .
1592 Took part  in the conclave, which elected Pope Clement VIII.    He was a member of the cardinalitial commission for the affairs of Hungary and Germany. In the absence of CardinalLudovico Maddruzo from Rome, he acted as protector of the Empire before the
Holy See.
Death. August 20th , 1593, Rome. Buried in the church of S. Sabina, Rome where his brothers erected a mausoleum in his memory (here the original inscription):

Only later the Cardinal was buried in Genoa.
