The Renaissance period

Il basso di Genova was the song/musical piece that represented the Republic of Genoa in the various courts of Europe.

“In the Middle Ages music was played on the streets” – explains Luca Franco Ferrari, an expert in ancient music – “and so typical stylistic forms were created for each city. Genoa also had its own”. From the melodies of the menestrels that once echoed in the alleyways, a low characteristic base line was born, that in technical jargon is called “obstinate” because it was always the same for the whole execution. In the Renaissance, music moved into the courts. The “Basso” Genoese inspired a rich musical repertoire that in a short time travelled beyond the Ligurian borders.

The Genoese patricians were rather austere and were fascinated by the modes of foreigners (Spanish, French, Tuscan)and this prevented a true music school from being born in Liguria, as was the case in Naples. In the “Basso di Genova” the task was to represent the richest Republic of the Mediterranean abroad.
