Placidia Spinola

Placidia Spinola, daughter of Filippo Spinola of San Luca son of Ambrogio, Marquis of Sesto and Venafro, Lord of Casalnoceto, and of Polissena Grimaldi daughter of Nicolò, Prince of Salerno, in 1598 married Prince Don Federico Landi, Prince of the Holy Roman Empire and of Val di Taro, Marquis of Bardi, Count of Compiano, Baron, and Lord of Turbigio.

From “Monete e Medaglie degli Spinola” by Agostino Olivieri …Filippo Spinola, the father of the great Ambrogio, had a daughter named Placidia, who on 27 September 1598 married Prince Don Federico Landi, Prince of the Holy Roman Empire, and of Val di Taro, Marquis of Bardi, Count of Compiano, Baron, and Lord of Turbigio. From this marriage she had an only daughter named Polissena, who married Gian Andrea Doria II, Prince of Melfi, Marquis of Torriglia and Knight of the Golden Fleece, who by imperial judgement was declared capable of succeeding her father in the feudal and patrimonial property of his house…

In 1627 Placidia organized the marriage of her daughter Polissena Landi with Giovanni Andrea II Doria (1607-1640), prince of Melfi, marquis of Torriglia and count of Loano.
In the same year, being the only legitimate daughter of Don Federico Landi, Polissena obtained from Ferdinand II of Habsburg the right to the succession of her father.
From 1630, the year of her father’s death, Polissena was able to boast the titles of sovereign princess of Borgotaro, marquise of Bardi, Countess of Compiano, Baroness of Bedonia and Valdena.

From “Monete e Medaglie degli Spinola” by Agostino Olivieri …Placidia Spinola and her husband Federico are remembered in the two medals I have put in table XIX, number 2 and XXII…N. LXXXI. The first was coined in memory of the foundation of the Monastery of Compiano, erected by those spouses in 1599 in order to transfer the Sisters of the Geminiana Coast, living according to the Rule of St. Francis Augustine…it is made of bronze, and has the half busts of Frederick and Placidia on the face with the inscription federicvs landvs placidia spinvla vallis tari principes bardi marchiones coms. On the reverse side, the two coats of arms Landi and Spinola are in a shield…
LXXXII. The other, which is in Table XXII, is also in bronze, and is kept in the R. Gallery of Florence. I had the plaster cast that I now publish. On the face, the coats of arms Landi and Spinola are joined together with the inscription: don fed . landvs . plac . spinola . sacri . romani . imperi . ac vallis . tari . princeps iiii. On the reverse side, a rock is carved with great skill, where agitated by the wind the sea waves come to break, and in a flourish I read : Awestro pesar; and around it is the memory of the remaining domains of Prince Federigo: bardi . march . complani . com . et barones . turbigiqve . domini. The rock beaten by the waves is seen in many other medals and coins of Landi; I am of the opinion, that this was made in memory of the hoped-for wedding of Federigo and Spinola…
