The board

The coat of arms is dedicated to Charles Hippolyte Philippe Spinola, first owner “Spinola” of Rixensart Castle, having married Francoise Conradine de Gavre, daughter of the owners of the Castle. The coat of arms is surrounded by the necklace that holds the Golden Fleece, or cavalierate that Charles Hippolyte Philippe Spinola received in 1667 from the King of Spain Charles II for the honour shown in the defence of the city of Lille against the French led by Louis XIV.

History

Charles Hippolyte Spinola was born in 1612 to Bertin-Oudart Spinola and Claire de Ligne d’Arenberg.. He was Count of Bruay, Baron d’Andre, Lord of Caunitz, of Embry, Monchel, Curlu, Haffringhes, Vandringhem, Rixensart, Bourgeois and Geneval. As the youngest son ofBertin Spinola, at the age of 15 he was inserted into the Vallone Regiment of Albert de Ligne, Prince of Barbacon, soon reaching the command of the Company of a Regiment, finally becoming Master of the field of a Regiment all his own.
Distinguished gentleman, valiant fighter, he was governor of Namur and Lille, cities that he defended in 1667 against the armies ofKing Louis XIV of France . He was appointed governor of Namur and Lille in 1665 In 1667 he defended the city against the French armies, personally commanded by Turenne and Louis XIV. When he heard of the king’s presence in front of the city, he behaved like a true gentleman: He kindly sent him a message in which he offered him a choice among the most beautiful castles around Lille, adding that he would make everything available to him that, in the city, would have been necessary for the maintenance of his house.
When the city surrendered 9 days later, he left the city with all the honours. For his tenacity he obtained from the King of Spain, Carlo II, the title ofKnight of the Golden Fleece.
After his defeat in Lille, he retired to private life. He died in 1670.

His descendants:
Filippo Carlo Federico (1650- 1709) fought for a long time in the service of Spain against France and on August 4, 1693 was taken prisoner in the Battle of Neerwinden, freed in the Campaign of 1695 he was appointed Governor of Namur and in 1706 Lieutenant General. From his marriage to Albertina Isabella Rhingrave in 1688,Cosme Gabriel Hycinthe was born and was later colonel of a vallona infantry regiment. He died in Dounai in 1712 following wounds inflicted under the walls of that city. His father had already preceded him in 1709 and his burial was temporarily housed in the Church of the Scalzi Carmelites in Brussels in which the body of his son found hospitality.
