Cardinal Agostino Spinola

Agostino Spinola was born in Savona in 1482, son of Giovanni Spinola and Petruccia Riario, great-grandson of Pope Sixtus IV, nephew of Cardinal Pietro Riario and cousin of Cardinal Raffaele Riario. He was a Cardinal of the Holy Roman Church, the first in the Spinola Family.

The board

Agostino Spinola was born in Savona in 1482, son of Giovanni Spinola and Petruccia Riario, great-grandson of Pope Sixtus IV, nephew of Cardinal Pietro Riario and cousin of Cardinal Raffaele Riario. He was a Cardinal of the Holy Roman Church, the first in the Spinola Family.

Early in his life, he was a secretary of Pope Julius II, and was in 1509 was named Bishop of Perugia. He took part if some sessions during the Fifth Council of the Lateran (1512-17). And then accompanied Pope Leo X on his trip to Bologna, to complete the treaty with the French after the Marignano battle. He was then Abbate Commendatario of St Pastore, from 1518 until his death.
Pope Clement VII made him a cardinal priest in the consistory of May 3rd, 1527.He received the red hat and the titular church of San Ciriaco alle Terme Diocleziane on August 3rd, 1527. He resigned as cardinal of Perugia in favor of his brother Carlo Spinola on February 15th, 1529. He was Camerlengo of the Sacred College of Cardinals from January 1st, 1532 to January 8th, 1533. On September 5th, 1534, he opted for the titular church of Sant’Apollinare alle Terme Neroniane-Alessandrine.
He participated in the papal conclave of 1534 that elected Pope Paul III. From May 10, 1535 until his death, he was also the administrator of thesee of Altari.
He died in Rome on October 18th, 1537.
He was buried in the convent of San Domenico in Savona. When that church was demolished in 1544, the marble bas-relief of his tomb was placed in the Palazzo Pozzobonello-Del Carretto.

In the description of the fresco the “Messa di Bolseno” by Raffaello Sanzio,  Vaticane rooms, Rome…Above them, four prelates of which Leonardo Grosso della Rovere ( Cardinal 1464-1520) and Raffaele Riario (Cardinal 1461-1521) were recognized, in front of Tommaso Riario (Bishop in 1516) and Agostino Spinola (Cardinal 1482-1537). They accompany Giulio II (Pope Giuliano della Rovere 1443-1513), on their knees with their elbows resting on a precious piece of travel furniture

Other brothers of Petruccia were Pietro Riario, Violante Riario, Domenico Riario, Bartolomeo Riario.
