The service was ordered by the French Minister for Foreign Affairs as a diplomatic gift to the Marquis Vincenzo Spinola of San Luca, Minister Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Genoa to France.
In 1825, the Marquis Vincenzo left the property of the service, through a testamentary bond, to the magnificent Tommaso Spinola, son of Giuliano Spinola, a dear friend.
It is assumed that after the death of Tommaso Spinola that the service was divided. In 1982 some pieces of the service were sold at an auction as part of the furniture and art gallery of the Castle of San Cristoforo, which became property of this branch of the Spinola family through the marriage of Tommaso Spinola to Camilla of the Marchesi De Fornari.
